Welcome!
Thanks!
Firstly, I'd like to thank you for visiting my blog! Fashion and style are special parts of my everyday life, and I'm happy to have the opportunity to share my ideas on these topics with you.
So how and when did I fall in love with fashion???
The first time I ever seriously cared about the way I looked was when I was 9 years old and I decided to enter my first beauty pageant at a local mall when I lived in California. I lived there with my mom in an apartment while I was trying my luck in the acting business, while my dad kept our home in Michigan (My mom and I came back to MI when I was 10 years old and I continued acting closer to home). Prior to this beauty pageant, I was a tomboy. Anyone who knows me now won't believe that statement without proof, resulting in a scavenger hunt through old pictures to find the ones of me in basketball shorts, t-shirts, and my pokemon or star wars hat (so I was a little bit of a nerdy-kid too ;-D). I'll try to dig up one of the old pictures to post here, but for now you'll just have to use your imagination! Back to the pageant...I had to find a formal dress to wear for the competition, so my mom and I shopped around the mall for the perfect dress. I fell in love with a baby blue spaghetti strap dress that fell just below my knees. It had embroidered flowers across the top and was absolutely girly! I loved it.
On the day of the pageant, my mom helped me put on some light makeup, the dress, white tights, and kitten heels. I felt truly beautiful gliding across the stage in my dress. When the time came for awards, I was unbelievably excited when I actually won!!! I posed for countless pictures in my lovely dress, tiara, and "Queen" sash, when my mom and I got back to our apartment. I felt fantastic.
Although a lot of people think poorly of pageants, I can honestly say that I wouldn't have the self-confidence and stage presence I have today if I had not competed in the many pageants I did growing up. Pageants for me weren't about being the most beautiful girl on stage...for me, they were about standing up on stage and feeling happy with who I was, and showing that to other people.
After the day of that first pageant, I began wearing skirts, dresses, and pink shirts with flowers on them. My outfits consisted mostly of pieces from Limited-Too (Do you remember that store?) The clothes made me feel pretty, and gave me a new confidence that I didn't have before.
I continued to develop into what the other elementary kids called a "girly-girl" throughout the remainder of my childhood years. Although I was still somewhat of a tomboy at heart, never afraid to try to beat the boys at a game of basketball at recess, I loved wearing outfits that made me feel pretty.
When my middle school years arrived, I attended a charter school back in Michigan. My wardrobe then consisted of white polos, navy-blue skirts, knee highs, and dress shoes. Then, my 7th and 8th grade years, the even cooler hunter green polos and khaki skirts! Needless to say, fashion was basically put on the wayside during my young teenage years. When the rare casual dress day came around, my mom and I would embark on a shopping trip so I could find the perfect outfit to wear to school that day.
Public high school came along and so did casual dress days 24/7 365! Before the start of my freshman year, I moved with my parents from the Detroit area to a small town in southern Michigan to live at what had been our summer lake-house since I was 7 years old. I don't think the small town was quite ready for my ideas on style. In the city, for some reason beyond my recollection, tube socks were the IT thing. I liked to wear my tube socks to school with jean skirts phat pharms tennis shoes, and girly tops. Not only was I known as the "new girl" in this small town where everyone had grown up together, but I became known as "the tube sock girl." I should have left the tube socks back in the city. I did start somewhat of a trend, three other girls started wearing tube socks too, but that was short lived.
Once I realized that tube socks are meant to be worn with softball or soccer uniforms, I changed up my style. I held on to the jean skirts, and switched out the tennis shoes and tube socks for flip flops. My freshman year was a transitional year for me, not only in the physical sense as far as the move from the city and the start of high school, but it also began the transition into what has become my current sense of style.
My First Fashionable Year
On the first day of my sophomore year of high school, I can remember exactly what I was wearing:
- gold corduroy skirt
- brown v-neck satin tank top (2 inch straps, gotta stay school appropriate!)
- gold necklace with brown, light pink, and peach beads
- my first pair of $100 shoes: brown heels with a gold band across the foot from Macy's
4 years later, I still have the skirt, shoes, and necklace, and I still love to dress like it's the first day of school everyday. By the middle of my sophomore year of high school, I lost my nickname as "the tube socks girl" and became better known for my sense of style and knack for putting outfits together. People sometimes ask me where I'm going so dressed up or put together, and my response is usually "to class," or "out to the movies with friends." Although I'm not always going somewhere special, picking out my outfit each night as if it's "the first day" gets me excited about going wherever I have to go, even if it is only to class.
Fashion Now, 24/7 365
Fashion makes me happy, and it's a joy that I want to share with others out there who feel like they could use some insight, and also with others who love fashion just as much as I do. So what's next for this blog? I plan to do somewhat of an "Outfit of the Day" (OOTD) post everyday, complete with pictures and links to where you can find similar pieces that make up the outfit. I would love your feedback and even suggestions on the posts, and am happy to give input on any style questions that you may have.
Thanks again for taking the time to stop by my blog! Check back again soon for my first OOTD post :-)
